Classic 1966 Ford Thunderbird in for Regular Service

At Les Haldane Mechanical, we love seeing classic vehicles come through the workshop, and recently we had the pleasure of servicing a stunning 1966 Ford Thunderbird.

This iconic American cruiser is powered by a massive big-block V8, with some models featuring a 7.0L engine producing roughly 345 horsepower, designed to deliver smooth power and effortless highway cruising.

Cars like this represent a special era of automotive design and engineering, and keeping them properly maintained is essential to preserving their performance and longevity.

Keeping a Classic Running Strong

Even though classic cars may not be driven every day, regular servicing is still extremely important. Engines from the 1960s rely on traditional mechanical systems such as carburettors, distributor ignition systems, and older-style seals and gaskets, all of which require periodic inspection and adjustment to keep them operating reliably.

During this Thunderbird’s routine service we carried out a comprehensive inspection to ensure everything was operating as it should. Regular servicing on vehicles like this typically includes:

  • Engine oil and filter replacement
  • Checking ignition components such as spark plugs, leads and distributor
  • Inspecting belts, hoses and cooling system components
  • Brake system inspection
  • Suspension and steering checks
  • General safety inspection

Classic V8 engines can last for decades when they are looked after properly. Regular oil changes, cooling system checks and ignition maintenance help prevent issues such as overheating, poor performance, or premature wear.

Why Regular Servicing Matters

Vehicles like the 1966 Thunderbird are now considered collectible classics. Routine servicing doesn’t just keep them running smoothly — it also helps protect their value.

Regular maintenance is essential for classic vehicles like the 1966 Thunderbird. Routine servicing helps prevent small issues from turning into major and costly repairs, keeps the engine running smoothly and efficiently, and ensures the vehicle remains safe and reliable to drive.

Just as importantly for classic cars, consistent maintenance helps preserve the vehicle’s originality and longevity, allowing owners to enjoy and protect these iconic machines for many years to come.

With classic cars especially, prevention is always better than repair. Parts can be harder to source, and repairs can become costly if issues are left too long.

Looking After Classics Old and New

Whether it’s a modern daily driver or a cherished classic like this Thunderbird, regular servicing is the best way to keep your vehicle performing at its best.

If your vehicle is due for a service, the experienced team at Les Haldane Mechanical is here to help keep it running reliably for years to come.
